ARTIST STATEMENT: HARRIET BELLOWS

The groundwork for my art has developed around a sense of structure, line, balance, and color. My involvement with layers of paint, ideas of volume, space and the interaction of these elements has established a platform. Within this context one of my greatest considerations deals with the honesty of simplicity and the demands associated with it.

The portraits are of no specific individual except when noted.  These portraits center around moments and moods or an expression.  Very often the face portrays a facial feature most prominent within that expression.

Although I haven’t made any clay pieces for seven years I have always felt that my clay has been as much about volume and form as the images that I paint on canvas.
